5.691 Development and Testing of Operational Dual-polarimetric Radar Based Lightning Initiation Forecast Techniques

چکیده
Lightning is one of Earth’s natural dangers, destructive not only to life but also physical property. According to the National Weather Service, there are on average 58 lightning fatalities each year, with over 300 related injuries (NWS 2010). The ability to forecast lightning is critical to a host of activities ranging from space vehicle launch operations to recreational sporting events. For example a single lightning strike to a Space Shuttle could cause billions of dollars of damage and possible loss of life. While forecasting that provides longer lead times could provide sporting officials with more time to respond to possible threatening weather events, thus saving the lives of player and bystanders. Many researchers have developed and tested different methods and tools of first flash forecasting, however few have done so using dualpolarimetric radar variables and products on an operational basis. The purpose of this study is to improve algorithms for the short-term prediction of lightning initiation through development and testing of operational techniques that rely on parameters observed and diagnosed using C-band dual-polarimetric radar.

Three-stage inversion improvement for forest height estimation using dual-PolInSAR data
This paper addresses an algorithm for forest height estimation using single frequency single baseline dual polarization radar interferometry data. The proposed method is based on a physical two layer volume over ground model and is represented using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) technique. The presented algorithm provides the opportunity to take advantages of t...

Data from the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) Integrated Project I (IP1) network of polarimetric X-band radars are used to observe a convective storm. A fuzzy logic hydrometeor identification algorithm is employed to study microphysical processes. Dual-Doppler techniques are used to analyze the 3D wind field. The scanning strategy, sensitivity, and low-level scanning foc...

The COPE field campaign operated from the 3rd July to the 20 th August 2013, with ground operations based in Davidstow Cornwall where the X-band polarimetric Doppler radar was located. Figure 1 shows the location of Davidstow, the Chilbolton S-band polarimetric Doppler radar and the C-band radars within the Met Office network. The Met Office Cobbacombe C-band radar was operational although not ...
متن کاملFully Polarimetric Analysis of Weather Radar Signatures Vollpolarimetrische Analyse von Wetterradar-Signaturen
The present doctoral thesis deals with radar polarimetry, namely with the investigation of properties of polarimetric variables potentially useful in radar meteorology. For use with dual-polarization radars, the degree of polarization is analyzed. This variable is available to planned operational radars. The degree of polarization is dependent on transmit polarization state and, consequently, i...
